Through STEM 2035, we have been able to continue our Girls in Mfg Clubs (started through ARC) and also start new STEM 2035 Mfg Clubs in area schools. Each year, many local manufacturers and colleges open their doors to area schools, welcoming students and teachers to tour their facilities. In October 2019, over 600 students from 16 area schools visited 16 manufacturers as well as Jamestown Community College and St. Bonaventure University. Students learned about the skills and education required to have a lucrative career right here in the Southern Tier. Activities included drafting, design, chemistry, measurement, welding, duct fabrication, using a press brake, fundamentals of electricity, and discovering the importance of essential non-technical skills. This year’s Summer Eaton Young Manufacturers Academy was inspired by the vision of Eaton and the Eaton Charitable Organization: To improve the quality of life and the environment, and to support our local community. Often when students are interested in science or math and are also interested in helping people, they tend to turn to medicine. We wanted to show students how manufacturing helps people and how area manufacturers are focused on supporting and improving our local community.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, fifty high school girls from five area school districts (Olean, Allegany-Limestone, Hinsdale, Cuba-Rushford, and Portville) came to Cutco Corporation to celebrate Women in Manufacturing. The girls began the day with some great Cutco videos and an introduction from Hugh Freeborn, Director of Engineering. An amazing team of tour guides then took small groups for a tour of the facilities. Following the tour and a delicious lunch, the girls were treated to a panel discussion with a series of full-circle stories from the Cutco Women in Manufacturing.

This year’s Girls in Mfg Day was another success! Over 90 participants, including girls, sisters, mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and best friends, worked with Women in Manufacturing to learn about the variety of possible careers in the field of manufacturing. Over 200 participants – high school students, middle school students, Girls in Mfg Club members, Girl Scouts, SBU ENACTUS students, engineers, and technicians – enjoyed our 7th annual DIDI 500. Schools continue to tour companies in our area, meeting with engineers, technicians, presidents, and CEOs, learning about the manufacturing opportunities in our area. Over thirty teachers toured around Cattaraugus County and Northern PA to visit area manufacturers and learn of possible career opportunities for their students. Teachers from Cattaraugus and Allegany counties visited twenty area manufacturers and educational institutions, meeting with engineers, HR, technicians, machinists, and CEOs, learning about the necessary technical and soft skills needed for a career in advanced manufacturing. What an awesome week! This summer’s Eaton YMA was a great success with over thirty children working with area teachers, interns, and area manufacturers to learn about local career opportunities in advanced manufacturing. Technology and electronics were the focus this summer as well as a surprise visit from the New York Secretary of State Rossana Rosado. Thank you again to Eaton CPSD in Olean, NY.
